International Sanskrit Day is celebrated every year on Shravana Purnima to honour and
promote Sanskrit, one of the oldest and most revered languages in the world. Known for its
rich literary heritage and highly structured grammar, Sanskrit has been the medium through
which India’s ancient wisdom has been preserved for centuries.
Many of India’s greatest scriptures and literary works, including the Vedas, Upanishads,
Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita and Puranas, were composed in Sanskrit. These
texts continue to inspire people and provide valuable insights into philosophy, science,
culture and spirituality. Sanskrit is not merely a language; it is a treasure house of knowledge
and an integral part of India’s cultural identity.
The primary aim of celebrating International Sanskrit Day is to encourage the study,
preservation, and promotion of the language. Schools, colleges and educational institutions
mark the occasion by organising various activities such as shloka recitations, speeches, essay-
writing competitions, cultural performances and Sanskrit skits. These programmes help
students appreciate the beauty and significance of the language.
In today’s world, Sanskrit remains relevant not only for understanding India’s rich heritage
but also for its scientific and linguistic value. Learning Sanskrit helps develop logical
thinking, improves language skills and strengthens our connection with ancient traditions.
As the pride of India’s cultural legacy, Sanskrit deserves our respect and support. By reading,
writing and speaking Sanskrit, we can ensure that this invaluable language continues to
inspire and guide future generations.
